Outstanding Condition Throughout

After 5 brilliant years of ownership, the time has come to part with number 196. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every second of this car and know that I’ll regret selling. However, an expanding business means I need a larger vehicle, so the head has to rule the heart unfortunately!

During my ownership, I’ve spared no expense in maintaining 196. As shown by the photographs, it is in impeccable cosmetic condition, with a comprehensive service and mechanical history to match. Below is a summary of each element of the car.

Exterior

The Capsicum Red paintwork presents as it should, with none of the usual ‘pinking’ of the plastics. This is due to a refresh I had carried out which addressed the faded door handles, roof rails, boot button surround, as well as the front bumper and bonnet which were painted to eliminate the stone chips. The colour match is exact. As shown in the photos, there are no issues with the bodywork at all.

The correct Trophy spec Speedline alloy wheels are spotless, having just been professionally powder coated. They’re wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 3 Tyres that were fitted in April 2022 and have covered less than 1000 miles since.

The OEM front splitter is also in place, with no cracks or previous repairs. These are a rare part now and are often replaced by the cheaper Skoda Fabia item.

All the black plastics were restored with Gtechniq C4 Permanent Trim Restorer to bring them back to as-new condition. This is a truly amazing product and doesn’t run off like traditional trim dressings.

The headlight bulbs have been replaced with Osram Night Breaker Lasers. These are far superior to the original bulbs and give better night time vision. Bosch Aerotwin wiper blades also keep the screen clear in rain to improve visibility.

The car has just been detailed inside and out, leaving 196 looking stunning and ready for the new owner to enjoy over the summer.

Interior

The interior of the car is in exceptional condition, with all electronics and controls working as they should. The original Recaro Trendline seats, complete with 196/500 plaque, are in situ and present very well with no rips, cigarette burns (this has been a smoke-free car since new) or stains. The rear, original bench seat is also in great condition. There is no peeling, cracking or scratching to the heater panel or dashboard controls.

I had a set of custom ‘Trophy’ mats made for 196, which I believe to be the only set in existence. They were made by Auto Style in 2020 and still look and feel fantastic. They fit perfectly into place both front and rear, and are a nice upgrade over the originals. The boot floor is protected by a custom carpet mat.

The steering wheel was re-trimmed by ‘Snappy’, a well known ex-Bentley trimmer who does a lot of work for the Renaultsport community. As shown, it’s a subtle re-trim using high quality leather and really improves the look / feels far nicer compared to the usual ‘melted’ OEM wheels. The steering wheel buttons for the cruise control work as they should.

I’ve installed a Pioneer Bluetooth head unit to the car, with a Connects2 wiring harness to enable the stalk controls to work. It’s a face-off unit for added security. The original head unit is included and it’s a very quick job to swap back over if the new owner prefers.

Finally, I’ve changed over the dash trims for 182 Full Fat items which I feel lifted the cabin with their ‘silver carbon’ appearance. I’ve got the original Trophy parts that I’ll include. Again, a two minute job to swap over.

Mechanical

As it is cosmetically, the car is in excellent mechanical shape with an extensive service history and receipt file to confirm. There are a mixture of service book stamps and receipts, sometimes both, showing the work completed and the huge amount of money spent maintaining 196. The car has been looked after by mostly independent specialists that include names such as :, Mark Fish, DTM Cars and TW & S Barker. Below are the key points.

Full service history (10 book stamps):
  • 30/3/07 - 9558 Mies
  • 4/8/08 - 19,815 Miles
  • 3/8/09 - 26,409 Miles
  • 20/2/10 - No mileage, invoice present (oil and filter change)
  • 29/6/11 - 43,992 Miles
  • 4/7/12 - 55,083 Miles
  • 8/13 - No mileage, invoice present (oil change)
  • 4/14 - No mileage, invoice present (oil, filter, coolant change)
  • 5/2/16 - 78,702 Miles
  • 2/2/17 - 81,318 Miles
  • 3/8/18 - 84,330 Miles
  • 14/7/20 - 91,425 Miles
  • 27/6/22 - 97,759 Miles

  • Sachs dampers fully rebuilt, unpinned and powder coated by Cornering Force in July 2021. Receipt present with dyno readout. These were installed and protected by Powerflex damper covers and bump stops as shown in the picture. The scraper seal modification was also specified in the rebuild to protect them for as long as possible. New OEM top mounts were used when refitting.
  • Brand new OEM Eibach front springs installed in July 2021. These were part of a group buy organised by the ClioTrophy.co.uk forum with Eibach and are no longer available. Original rear springs were also sourced, powder coated and installed with Mark Fish spec Koni adjustable rear shock absorbers (original invoice and adjuster keys present) which have been matched to the front Sachs. A pair of original rear shock absorbers in great condition are included in the sale, as well as a full set of Cooksport springs.
  • Service just carried out June 2022 by TW & S Barker Newcastle Renault Specialists, including oil, filters and an overall checkover. They confirmed the car is in sound mechanical health and ready for the new owner.
  • 4x brand new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres fitted April 2022 and have covered less than 1,000 miles.
  • Belts and water pump service was last done in August 2018 by DTM Cars Newcastle, a well known Renaultsport specialist. Invoice and book stamp to show work. 14,000 miles travelled since work was completed.
  • Brake discs and pads are all in good condition. Genuine Renault discs on the rear with Brembo pads, and Brembo High Carbon discs with Brembo pads on the front.
  • Milltek non-resonated stainless steel exhaust system. This sounds superb and really suits the car. Original purchase invoice included.
  • Powerflex inner / outer ARB bushes, steering rack bushes and lower gearbox mount. New OEM upper gearbox mount and engine mount fitted January 2021.
  • RS Tuner 98 ron performance map. This is a commonly used mapping on the 182 that doesn’t provide more power, but smoothes out the torque curve, gives a better idle and sharpens up the throttle. I will include the RS Tuner box (now a £250 plus item), 98 ron mapping file and OEM mapping file, so it’s easily put back to standard settings if the new owner requires. Having driven 182s with both this mapping and the OEM mapping, I’d recommend keeping it for the improved driveability and more dynamic feel it brings.
  • Following an MOT failure last year, a new catalytic converter was fitted, as well as a new offside drive shaft and offside wheel bearing which were advisory items. A clean pass with no advisories was achieved following the work carried out.
  • Fresh MOT until June 2023 with no advisories.

List of spares included
  • 2x rear OEM dampers (used, in good condition)
  • 2x 182 Cup front dampers (used while Sachs were getting refurbished, in good condition)
  • 1x full set Cooksport springs (used, in good condition but show signs of wear)
  • 1x intermittent wiper stalk (this was a job I’ve just not had time to do!)
  • 1x original radio head unit
  • 1x set Trophy dashboard trims
  • 1x RS Tuner box and 98 Ron / OEM mapping files

Given the outstanding condition, extensive history file and rarity of the Trophy, the asking price is £12,500. No part-exchanges, please. The car is based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Test drives are welcome once proof of fully comprehensive insurance specific to this car is provided, as well as proof of funds for the amount the car is advertised for.

I’m more than happy to collect from Newcastle train station or airport.

Payment to be made on collection by bank transfer only. No cash or cheques, please. Feel free to contact me (Iain) with any questions. My number is 07378106216.

I sold mine using The Market (by Bonhams now)

Collecting Cars has sold quite a few Trophies; yours will sell easily with that spec/history/condition (y)

Was quite exciting having a proper advert with professional pictures and write up, then a final run of bids taking it from 7 to 9k :)

sorry to hijack your post slightly but could you tell me where you got your steering wheel retrimmed and where did you get those mats from?

The steering wheel was done by Snappy (Andrew Mayer on Facebook) - quite well known in the Renault scene. Autostyle did the mats.
